The Present Perfect and the First Conditional

In English we are learning about how to use the future to talk about things we are planning to do.  We use the present continuous for future plans and for talking about an action that is happening right now.  We use the present continuous to talk about something we´ve already planned.  Here are some examples.

I am going camping.
You/We/They are going camping.
He/She/It is going camping.

We use the first conditional to talk about future events that are likely to happen.
If we take John, he'll be really pleased.
If you give me some money, I'll pay you back tomorrow.
If they tell us they want it, we'll have to give it to them.
If Mary comes, she'll want to drive.
The 'if' clause can be used with different present forms.
If I go to New York again, I'll buy you a souvenir from the Empire State Building.
If he's feeling better, he'll come.
If she hasn't heard the bad news yet, I'll tell her.
The "future clause" can contain 'going to' or the future perfect as well as 'will'.

The Passive Tense

We use the passive tense when we don´t know who is doing the action.  When using the passive tense, it is not important or not known, who or what is performing the action.

Example: Fish robots are produced in Japan.  Think about what is the verb.  Produced.  Produced is the participle of produce.  Produce, produced, produced.
In this sentence, we do not know who produced the fish robots.  So we use the passive (the participle verb).

Form of Passive

Subject + finite form of to be + Past Participle (3rd column of irregular verbs)

Example: Oranges are grown in Spain.  Coffee is grown in Brazil.
Grow, grew, grown.

Present Perfect

In English class we have been learning and practicing the present perfect tense.  We use the present perfect to say that an action happened at an unspecified time before now. The exact time is not important. You CANNOT use the present perfect with specific time expressions such as: yesterday, one year ago, last week, when I was a child, when I lived in Japan, at that moment, that day, one day, etc. We CAN use the present perfect with unspecific expressions such as: ever, never, once, many times, several times, before, so far, already, yet, just, etc.

We use just to explain something that has recently happened.  Already is for an affirmative sentence and yet is for a negative sentence! Remember the placement of already and yet in a sentence!

Saint Patrick´s Day

On Friday we are going to celebrate St. Patrick´s Day.  Remember to wear as much green as you can.  Practice the Molly Malone song and get ready to play lots of fun games.

Below is a video from the famous Boston band from Ireland, called the Dropkick Murphies.  Every year people listen to this band on St. Patrick´s Day.

Another musician from Ireland is Bono from U2.  Below is one of his songs, I Still Haven´t Found What I´m Looking For.  See if you can find examples of the present perfect in this song.

Another important part of Irish culture besides music is Irish step-dancing.  Below is a video of this famous style of dancing.

Thursday, the fifth grade is going to see a play called "Vampires."  Here you have a song that you will hear in the play.  Practice it with the Song 2 Lyrics and remember about the musical interlude!

In English, we are learning about some amazing animals!  Australia has some of the most unique animals in the world.  Here is a video of some cool animals that live only in Australia.  Describe your favorite Australian animal.  Does it have fangs, or feathers, or fur?
