Ferdinand and Isabella

In Social Science, we are learning about Spain under the rule of Ferdinand and Isabella.  They became known as the Catholic Monarchs.  In 1474 when Enrique died, Isabel declared herself as queen.  But Juana, Enrique´s daughter, wanted to be queen.  So there was a war between their supporters.  In 1479, Isabel won the war and Fernando became the King of Aragon.

We are also learning about the Age of Discovery.  There were many explorers during who discovered different places around the world.  One of the most famous explorers of this time was Christopher Columbus.  In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue!

The Middle Ages

In social science, we are learning about the Middle Ages.  The Middle Ages began at the end of the Roman Empire in 476 A.D.  People moved away from the cities to the countryside and religion was extremely important.  

Spain was not a country during the Middle Ages.  Instead, it was divided into small Christian kingdoms in the north and a Muslim kingdom in the south called al-Andalus.
