Ecosystems

In science, the fifth grade is learning about ecosystems.  An ecosystem is made up of all the living and non-living things in a place.  There are many different types of ecosystems around the world.  Can you name some different ecosystems?

This is a video introducing what an ecosystem is.  How do living and non-living things interact in their environment?  What are some biotic components in an ecosystem?  What are some abiotic components in an ecosystem?

Think of your favorite animal.  What abiotic and biotic things does your animal need to survive?  What kind of an ecosystem does your favorite animal live in?

Below is a diagram of how ecosystems are organized.  Why do you think it is bad if a population becomes extinct?

  2. I think it's bad when a population becomes extinct because the other populations that interact with it are affected.
For example, when the rabbit population in Spain grew smaller because of hunting, the population of the Iberian lynx was affected a lot.
